2026 Student Laptop Recommendations: Choose according to department and budget during the first semester of school, with discounted education prices

How to choose a laptop during the back-to-school season? This article compiles a recommended list of laptops for students in 2026 based on departments (literature, science and engineering, design, and salary) and budgets (15,000 to more than 50,000), plus Apple BTS, various brands’ education price discount schedules, and the 5 most common mistakes, all in one go before the start of school.

1. Why back-to-school season is the best time to buy a laptop

Every year from mid-July to the end of September is the "Back to School" period for the laptop industry. During this period, three things will happen at the same time: Apple's BTS education program starts (buy a Mac and get AirPods or accessories as discounts), Windows camp brands launch back-to-school program prices, and e-commerce platforms issue discount codes in conjunction with the back-to-school period. My own experience in tracking price comparisons for many years is that the price of the same model during the back-to-school season is often 5% to 15% cheaper than in May or October, and it comes with more items. If you or your children are going to start school in September, the end of July to August is the golden window to buy. You don’t need to wait for Double 11—the laptop discounts on Double 11 usually clear out the inventory of old models, while new models are directly discounted during the back-to-school season.

Tip

  • Apple BTS usually starts in mid-June and closes at the end of September. College freshmen can apply for education prices with their admission notice.
  • First put the model you want to buy into your shopping cart and track the price for two weeks, then decide when to buy.

2. Choosing laptops from the Ecosystem: demand is much different

The biggest misunderstanding when choosing a student laptop is to directly ask "which one has the highest CP value". The correct way to ask is "what software will be used in my department". I have sorted out the actual needs of the four major categories of departments in the table below. Make sure you have the numbers first and then look at the budget.
Department type Commonly used software Key specifications Recommended budget
Literary/Business Administration Office, Google Docs, online courses Weight ≤1.4kg, battery life more than 10 hours 15,000~25,000
Science and engineering (non-employee) MATLAB, SolidWorks, statistical software CPU performance, 16GB memory, independent graphics can be considered 25,000~40,000
Design/Communication Photoshop, Premiere, Figma Screen color gamut 100% sRGB, starting from 16GB, SSD 512GB 30,000~50,000
Staff/Asset Management IDE, Docker, virtual machine, AI tools Starting from 16GB (32GB recommended), SSD 512GB or above 25,000~45,000

Tip

  • If you are not sure what software the department will use, first go to the department website to read the course syllabus or ask your direct supervisor, which is more accurate than watching review videos.

3. Recommended budget: from less than 15,000 to more than 50,000

Budget is the most practical filter. The following are four budget band strategies that I compiled based on the market conditions of the 2026 school season. The focus is not on recommending specific models (models change every season), but on "what specifications should be obtained" in each price range. If you compare according to this standard, it will not be expensive.
  • Below 15,000: Choose A Chromebook (Only Documents, Cloud Work) Or A Brand New Business Machine (Thinkpad T Series, Latitude). Brand New Windows Machines Generally Sacrifice Memory And Screen At This Price, And It Is Not As Durable As Buying A Second-Hand Business Machine.
  • 15,000 To 30,000 (Mainstream Sweet Spot): This Price Requires "16Gb Memory + 512Gb Ssd + 1080P Ips Screen" Which Is A Reasonable Standard. Anything Below This Specification Will Be Expensive.
  • 30,000 To 45,000: Macbook Air (Education Price), Thin And Light Flagships Of Various Brands (Zenbook, Xps, Gram) Are All In This Range, Focusing On Comparing Screen Quality, Keyboard Feel And After-Sales Service
  • 50,000 And Above: Only Required For Serious Audio And Video Design Needs Or E-Sports Needs. Remember That E-Sports Laptops Generally Start At 2.5Kg. You Will Regret It If You Carry It To Class Every Day.

Important Notes

Zero interest rate for installment does not mean free of charge: Before applying for installment plan, students should confirm whether the total price is higher than the single price. The "zero interest rate" of some channels will be reflected in the selling price.

4. Mac or Windows? The real considerations of the student party

There is no standard answer to this question, but there are several judgment points that can help you quickly converge. I have been working with a MacBook for a long time, and I have always been surrounded by colleagues and students in the Windows camp. The comprehensive judgment is: it depends on your department’s software, your budget, and your surrounding ecosystem. If the specified software on the system only has Windows version (this is the case for many engineering and statistical software), don’t force yourself to use Mac to run virtual machines; if you have a budget of less than 30,000, there are many Windows options; if you already use iPhone and mainly use it for paperwork, notes, and video editing, MacBook Air’s educational price is the most stable choice for you.
  • Choose Mac: It Has The Best Battery Life And Touchpad Experience, High Value Retention Rate, And Is Suitable For Writing/Design/Audio/Video, But Make Sure The System Software Has A Macos Version
  • Choose Windows: There Are Many Choices In Price Range, Complete Compatibility Of Games And Engineering Software, And Many Maintenance Bases.
  • Either Side Of The Salary Department Is Fine: Macos Is A Unix-Like Environment With A Good Development Experience, And Windows Can Also Supplement It With Wsl2. It Depends On Which One You Prefer In Labs Or Courses.

5. How to get the 2026 education price and start-of-school discounts

Education discounts are not exclusive to Apple, but each company has different verification methods. Common principle: Always use the school email (.edu.tw) to register or go through UNiDAYS for verification. Most brands accept admission notices before college freshmen get their school email.
  • Apple Bts: The Education Price Itself Is About 95% Off, And Airpods Or Accessories Will Be Given As Discounts During The Event. It Is Applicable To Both Mac And Ipad. Graduate Students And Faculty Are Also Eligible.
  • Microsoft/Various Windows Brands: The Official Website Education Store Offers Discounts Starting From About 10% Off, And Some Brands Will Also Offer Extended Warranties During The School Term.
  • Office And Software: Most Universities Have Campus Licenses (Office 365, Matlab, Adobe). Ask The School First Before Spending Money To Buy Software.
  • E-Commerce School Start Dates: The School Start Areas Of Momo And Pchome Often Have Brand Co-Branded Discount Codes. You Can Compare The Price With The Education Price And Choose The Best One.

Tip

  • The warranty of the machine bought at the educational price is the same as that of the regular version, and there are no restrictions on resale. There is no need to worry about castration of the "educational version"
  • First check the campus authorization list in the school plan. You may save tens of thousands of dollars on Office and Adobe alone.

6. The 5 most common minefields

Every year at the beginning of the school year, we see the same tragedy happen again. I will list these five mistakes and check them one by one before buying:
  • 8Gb Of Memory And Non-Expandable: Web Pages And Ai Tools In 2026 Will Be Memory-Hungry. 8Gb Will Become Stuck After A Year. 16Gb Is The Bottom Line.
  • 1366X768 Low-Resolution Screen: This Is The One That Says "Hd" Instead Of "Fhd" In The Specification Sheet. Your Eyes Will Protest After Looking At It For A Semester.
  • 128Gb/256Gb Storage: System Plus Office Plus Cloud Synchronization Is Enough, Starting From 512Gb
  • Buying A Gaming Laptop As A Commuter Machine: The Performance Is Sufficient, But Carrying 2.5Kg With A Charger Every Day, Most People Leave It In The Dormitory After Two Weeks
  • Just Watch Youtube And Place An Order After Unboxing: Be Sure To Go To A Physical Store To Touch The Keyboard And Weigh It. Review Videos Cannot Save You On The Feel Of The Keyboard.

Important Notes

Be especially careful with promotional machines whose specifications are labeled "Intel" or "AMD" but do not indicate the generation. It may be an old platform from two or three years ago that is out of stock.

7. Checklist before school starts

Getting a new laptop is not the end. Spend one night before school starts to complete these settings, and the whole semester will go much smoother. This list is a process I go through every time I get a new phone, so I just use it:
  • Run All System Updates (The First Update Usually Takes More Than 30 Minutes, Don’T Run It In Class On The First Day Of School)
  • Enable Office 365 Or Google Workspace For Campus With Your School Mailbox
  • Set Up Automatic Cloud Backup (Onedrive/Icloud/Google Drive). Disappearance Of Homework Is A Real Accident That Happens Every Semester
  • Install A Password Manager And Manage Your School System Account And Password From The First Day
  • Confirm The Warranty Card And Purchase Invoice, Take A Photo And Save It In The Cloud, Which Will Be Used During Repairs.

Key Takeaways

  • 1 The back-to-school season (mid-July to the end of September) is the most cost-effective time to buy laptops throughout the year. Apple BTS and education projects of various brands are launched at the same time.
  • 2 When choosing a laptop, first consider the department and then the budget: battery life and weight are important for the literature department, CPU and memory for science and engineering, screen color accuracy is required for design, and the recommended starting salary is 16GB.
  • 3 You can usually save 5% to 10% on education prices, and Apple BTS will give you AirPods or discounted accessories. Remember to use your school email to verify
  • 4 Choose a Chromebook or a second-hand business machine for less than 15,000 yuan, 20,000 to 30,000 yuan is the mainstream sweet spot, and only consider creator or e-sports models for more than 40,000 yuan.
  • 5 The most common pitfall: only look at cheap models with 8GB of memory, 1366x768 screen resolution, and only 128GB of storage.
