Actual test of AI image generation tools: Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion My choice after using it for 6 months
Actual measurement of Midjourney v7, DALL-E 3, and Stable Diffusion XL after half a year. Which Chinese prompt is the strongest? Which commercial license is the loosest? Which one is suitable for newbies? This article gives a conclusion.
💡 This article is my observation after using the three major tools to actually create marketing materials, social graphics, and presentation graphics for about 6 months. Each section below will mark my preferences and pitfalls I have encountered. Continuously updated with tool versions.
Table of Contents
1. My direct conclusion after 6 months of use (lazy version)
-
my real budget
The current monthly fixed cost is $30: Midjourney Pro $30/month (unlimited fast credit). DALL-E uses ChatGPT Plus directly and does not count here. Stable Diffusion bought an RTX 4070 Ti Super at one time, ran Forge WebUI, and paid back in half a year.
-
Tools I've given up on
Bing Image Creator (strict rules, erratic quality), Leonardo AI (convoluted interface, cumbersome model decentralization management), Adobe Firefly (poor Chinese prompts, insufficient character realism). It’s not that they are bad, it’s that the above three have covered 95% of the scenarios.

Chinese prompt Personal test gap
Midjourney Chinese prompts must be translated into English first (I use Claude to translate). If you type directly into Chinese, the quality will drop by 40%. DALL-E 3 Chinese prompt performs surprisingly well (GPT itself will understand the intention). Stable Diffusion Look at the model. Mainstream models such as SDXL must use English prompts to be stable.
| Usage context | I will choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Social Posts/IG Pictures | Midjourney v7 | The most stable style, realistic + illustration switching, the most natural, 5 seconds to produce the picture |
| Realistic characters / photography style | Midjourney v7 | 30% more realistic than DALL-E, but human hands still make occasional mistakes |
| Accurate text embedding in images | DALL-E 3 (ChatGPT) | The only artifact that can stably generate Chinese and English text and poster design |
| Commercial authorization without dispute | Stable Diffusion (local) | Your hard drive and your model, completely free of copyright risks |
| Brand logo variations | Midjourney + post-production | AI-generated logos are still unreliable and can be used as mood boards |
| Quick concept draft | DALL-E 3 (free version) | ChatGPT Plus is ready to use and gives you an idea in 5 seconds |
| A large number of batches with the same theme | Stable Diffusion + ComfyUI | No API fee for local running, suitable for more than 100 photos |
Tip
- Beginners, don’t learn three at a time. Start with DALL-E 3 (built-in with ChatGPT Plus), which is the least stressful.
- Midjourney’s advanced usage is worth spending $30 to learn for a month before deciding whether to renew.
- Stable Diffusion is suitable for power users with engineering background. It is recommended for pure designers to leave it alone first.
2. What is AI image generation? How far will it go in 2026?
-
Text-to-Image
Enter a text description and AI will automatically generate the corresponding image. This is the most basic and commonly used function.
-
Image-to-Image
Upload reference images, and AI will perform style conversion, modification or extension according to your instructions.
-
Local modification (Inpainting)
Select a specific area in the image and let AI modify only that area, leaving the rest unchanged
-
Image extension (Outpainting)
Expand existing images outwards, and AI automatically fills in surrounding content
Tip
- You can use AI to generate high-quality images without any painting background.
- AI in 2026 can already handle fingers, text, and other parts that used to make mistakes very well.
3. A complete comparison of the three major AI drawing tools
| Compare items | Midjourney | DALL-E 3 | Stable Diffusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Developer | Midjourney Inc. | OpenAI | Stability AI |
| Usage | Discord / web version | ChatGPT built-in | Local installation / web version |
| Characteristics of painting style | Strong artistic sense and cinematic quality | Realistic, natural, and highly obedient | Most customizable |
| Difficulty to get started | Intermediate (need to learn Discord) | The simplest (just use Chinese) | The most difficult (requires technical foundation) |
| Chinese support | Limited, it is recommended to use English | Excellent, supports Chinese Prompt | Depends on model |
| Generation speed | Fast (about 30 seconds) | Fast (about 15 seconds) | Depends on hardware |
| Commercial authorization | Paid version available for commercial use | Available for commercial use | Open source, free to use |
| monthly fee | US$10-60 | ChatGPT Plus US$20 | Free (need to bring your own graphics card) |
Tip
- Newbies are recommended to start with DALL-E 3, which can be generated directly with Chinese description in ChatGPT
- For artistic quality, choose Midjourney, for freedom and free choice, Stable Diffusion
4. Beginner's guide: start your first AI image in 5 minutes
-
Step 1: Choose a tool and register
The fastest way is to open ChatGPT (with DALL-E 3), or register on the Midjourney official website. There is a free quota available for trial first.
-
Step 2: Write your first prompt
Start with a simple description, such as "A Shiba Inu in a suit sitting at a desk working, cartoon style"
-
Step 3: Observe the results and adjust
It’s normal to be dissatisfied with the first generated result. Add more detailed descriptions: light, angle, style, tone.
-
Step 4: Use advanced features
Try uploading reference images, using local modifications, adjusting aspect ratio and other advanced functions
-
Step 5: Download and use
After you are satisfied, download the high-resolution image and confirm the license terms of the tool.
Tip
- Don’t feel pressured to play for 30 minutes for the first time. It’s most important to familiarize yourself with the tool’s reaction patterns.
- Save the generated good pictures and corresponding prompts and build your own prompt database
5. Prompt writing skills: let AI draw the picture you want
-
Subject description (Who/What)
Clearly describe the main character or subject of the image, such as "a young woman" "a modern building"
-
Environmental scene (Where)
Explain the background and environment, such as "On the streets of Tokyo in the rain" or "On the sunny beach"
-
Style specification (Style)
Specify an art style, such as "Watercolor Style", "Cyberpunk", "Studio Ghibli Style", "Photorealistic"
-
Lighting/Mood
Describe the light and atmosphere, such as "golden hour golden sunset" and "moody dark tone"
-
Technical parameters (Technical)
Add camera parameters to increase realism, such as "85mm lens, f/1.4, bokeh"
| Prompt level | example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| primary | a cat | A cat is randomly generated, the quality is unstable |
| intermediate | An orange cat sits on the windowsill, outside the window is a rainy city and warm indoor lights | There is a scene and atmosphere, and the quality is stable |
| upscale | A ginger cat sitting on a windowsill, rainy cityscape outside, warm interior lighting, cinematic composition, 35mm film grain, cozy atmosphere | Cinematic quality, rich in details |
Tip
- Midjourney and Stable Diffusion use English prompts generally better than Chinese
- Make good use of "Negative Prompt" to exclude unnecessary elements, such as --no text, watermark
6. Commercial authorization and copyright: Can AI-generated images be sold?
-
Avoid generating celebrity portraits
Even if AI can generate it, using celebrity portraits may involve issues of portrait rights
-
Avoid counterfeit brand logos
Don’t let AI generate logos or brand elements that are already trademarked
-
Keep build records
Save prompt and build time as proof of your usage
| tool | Free version for commercial use | Paid version for commercial use | Things to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midjourney | Not for commercial use | Available for commercial use (annual revenue > US$1 million requires enterprise version) | Generated image Midjourney reserves the right to display |
| DALL-E 3 | Available for commercial use | Available for commercial use | OpenAI does not claim ownership, users have full rights |
| Stable Diffusion | Open source and free to use | Subject to model authorization | Some fine-tuned models have additional restrictions, which need to be confirmed |
Important Notes
Copyright regulations for AI-generated images vary from country to country, and there is currently no clear case in Taiwan. It is recommended to consult a legal professional before commercial use.
7. How to choose free vs paid plan?
| tool | Free plan | Entry fee | Advanced payment | Suitable for objects |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Midjourney | No free version | US$10/month (200 photos) | US$30/month (unlimited) | designer, creator |
| DALL-E 3 | ChatGPT free version has limited limits | US$20/month (ChatGPT Plus) | US$200/month (Pro) | General users, content creators |
| Stable Diffusion | Completely free (install locally) | Online version is about US$10/month | The cost of building your own server varies | technology users, businesses |
| Canva AI | 50 times per month | US$13/month (Pro) | US$30/month (Team version) | Marketers, social editors |
| Adobe Firefly | 25 points per month | US$5/month (single) | Included in Creative Cloud | design professionals |
Tip
- Use the free quota to fully test it first and confirm which tool best meets your needs before paying.
- If you only need pictures occasionally, the DALL-E credit of the free version of ChatGPT may be enough.
- Professional designers recommend the Midjourney Standard plan, which is the most cost-effective for unlimited generation.

9. 5 pitfalls I’ve personally stepped on that you can avoid
-
❌ 1st Month BUY SUBSCRIPTION TO ALL TOOLS
Midjourney Pro + DALL-E (ChatGPT Plus) + Leonardo + Stable Diffusion Cloud + Firefly, monthly fee is $120. As a result, you only get Midjourney. It is recommended to use the 1-month free version to test the water temperature first, and then find the one you use most often and then pay monthly.
-
❌ Use AI diagrams directly in business customer delivery
If customers look closely, they will find AI flaws such as 6 fingers, blurred text, and asymmetric composition. Now I always use Photoshop / Affinity Photo for post-production before all commercial use, and it takes 5-10 minutes to fix the details. AI drawing is only 70% complete, not 100%.
-
❌ Regenerate the same picture over and over again to achieve perfection
Quota wakes up after excessive use. Actual measurement: Regenerating more than 10 times usually won’t make things better, it’s just a waste of quota. If there is no result within 10 times, change the prompt or change the tool.
-
❌ Ignore negative prompt (Stable Diffusion)
Stable Diffusion If you don’t write negative prompt, the quality will be reduced by half. I fixed the template: `low quality, blurry, deformed, extra fingers, watermark, signature, text`. Newbies often overlook this.
-
❌ Copy the prompt to AI and expect the same result
Midjourney 5/6/7 has extremely different outputs from the same prompt; so does DALL-E 2/3. Don’t copy prompts from the Internet without thinking, understand the role of each keyword and then adjust it.
Important Notes
The above are personal test results. Different people's usage scenarios and tool versions may produce different results. It is recommended to try the free/trial version of each tool yourself to form your own judgment.
