3C preparation list for the 2026 school season: what else to buy besides laptops, all prepared at once according to accommodation type

In addition to laptops during the back-to-school season, what other 3C products should I buy, and which ones should I not buy? This article organizes the 3C preparation list for the start of school in 2026 based on the three types of "living in dormitories/renting/commuting", covering screens, desk lamps, printers, headphones, mobile power supplies and network equipment, with budget allocation suggestions and education price application timelines.

Let’s make a clear distinction first: must buy before school starts vs refill after school starts

The most common mistake during the back-to-school season is to spend the entire 3C budget for the entire year one week before registration. As a result, you buy a bunch of things you won’t use and don’t have the money to upgrade what you really need. In practice, it will be much easier to split the list into two batches. There are only three "must-buy items before school starts": laptops, desktop lighting, and Internet connections. If you lack one of these three things, you will be stuck in the first week of school - you can't hand in homework without a laptop, your eyes are hurt when reading at night without a desk lamp, and even the course system has problems without the Internet. "To make up for it after school starts" includes things like external monitors, printers, tablets, and mechanical keyboards. Only after you have taken classes for two or three weeks will you know whether you need dual screens to write programs or a tablet to take notes. If you take classes first and then replenish equipment, you will spend a lot of money.

Tip

  • Only buy the three necessary items before registration, keep the rest in your budget, and make up for it according to actual needs one month after school starts.
  • Don't buy large equipment before the dormitory allocation results are available. The size of the desktop and the location of the sockets will determine what you can put in it.

List according to accommodation type: dormitory / rental / commuting accommodation

They are also freshmen in college, but the accommodation types are different, so the things they should buy are very different. Living in school dormitories: The desktop is usually only 60 to 80 centimeters wide, the number of sockets is limited and most of them are shared, and the Internet is provided by the school. In this case, it is preferred to choose a clip-on desk lamp (which does not occupy the desktop), extension cords with independent switches and overload protection, and in-ear headphones with active noise reduction (which is useful when roommates have different schedules). Unless you are sure the external monitor can fit on the desktop, wait until it is connected. Off-campus rental: The biggest difference is that you have to handle the Internet yourself. First confirm whether the landlord provides "independent optical fiber" or "whole-building sharing". The shared type will be very slow during peak hours. At this time, bringing a better router will be of limited help. You must directly confirm the bandwidth with the landlord. Renters should also prepare more dehumidification-related equipment. Humidity in old apartments in Taiwan will directly affect the lifespan of electronic products. Commuting and living at home: most of them only lack personal equipment, tables, chairs and lighting are available at home. The budget can be more focused on the laptop itself and accessories for commuting (power bank, noise-canceling headphones, lightweight backpack).

Tip

  • Check the school regulations before living in a dormitory. Some dormitories prohibit the use of high-power electrical appliances and self-bred sharing devices.
  • Testing your mobile phone’s internet speed before renting a house is much more reliable than reading the name of the plan mentioned by the landlord.
Period 3 節

Desktop lighting: the most commonly ignored item with the highest CP value

Many people are willing to spend 30,000 yuan to buy a laptop, but use the ceiling lamp in the dormitory to read until their eyes ache. In fact, the price of a good desk lamp is only one-tenth of that of a laptop, but its impact on long-term reading comfort is not small. When choosing a desk lamp, you only need to grasp four numbers: the center illumination of the desktop is recommended to be above 500 lux (more than 750 lux for long-term fine work), the color temperature should be around 4000K, which is the most suitable natural light for reading, the color rendering should be Ra 80 or above, and the certification should be AA level of Taiwan CNS 15592 (illumination uniformity requirements are stricter than A level). The other two specifications affect the long-term use experience more than brightness: flicker-free and low blue light. These two items will not be written in the most conspicuous place, but you must read them if you use them for a long time. If the desktop in your dormitory is narrow, choose a clip-on base so that it does not occupy the desktop at all.

Tip

  • Let the light shine in from the opposite side of your dominant hand to avoid blocking the shadow of your hand when writing.
  • Don’t just turn on the desk lamp in a completely dark room. Too strong a contrast between light and dark will make you more likely to feel fatigued. Keep basic lighting indoors.
Period 4 節

External monitor: Which departments really need it and how to choose without overstepping the mark?

An external monitor isn't necessary for everyone, but it can double efficiency for some purposes. Typical situations where it is needed are: writing programs (reading documents while coding), making reports that require opening multiple files at the same time, and video and audio editing that require large screens and accurate colors. If you are just doing paperwork and taking notes in class, a laptop screen is actually enough. If you really want to buy it, there is a usual sweet spot for size and resolution: 24-inch with FHD, 27-inch with 2K, and 32-inch with 4K. Too high a resolution will eat into the performance of the graphics card. The IPS panel is the most stable, with accurate colors and wide viewing angles, making it suitable for most uses. The update rate of 60Hz is enough, so there is no need to spend more for good-looking specifications. The most practical but often overlooked specification is Type-C power supply: if it is supported, one line can transmit images and charge the laptop at the same time. The desktop will be much cleaner, which is especially useful in dormitories with limited desktop space. Before buying, make sure the power supply wattage is enough for your laptop.

Tip

  • First measure the width and depth of a dormitory table. The depth of a 27-inch screen plus the base is often beyond expectations.
  • Models that support Type-C single-wire power supply are more expensive, but the savings on the docking station are usually worth it.

Printer: First figure out how many pages you print in a year

Printers are a classic example of "cheap to buy, expensive to maintain." Before deciding whether to buy one, make an honest estimate of your annual print volume. Printing less than a hundred copies a year: don’t buy it. The cost of printing single sheets in school libraries and supermarkets may be lower than owning a machine. Moreover, if the inkjet machine is not used for a long time, it will dry out and become clogged, which will make it more troublesome when it comes time to print. Printing more than a few hundred sheets a year (common in departments that require paper reports and printed handouts): It’s worth buying, but you have to account for it. The point is never how much the camera costs, but the cost per print - divide the price of consumables by the number of prints indicated in the specifications, and calculate black and white and color separately. This number is the real long-term cost. The principles for selecting a model are simple: if you mainly print black and white text reports, choose laser because it is fast, the toner will not dry out, the cost per print is low, and the document will not smear due to moisture; only consider inkjet if you need to print color photos or use a small amount. If the print volume is stable, the original large ink supply (continuous ink supply) model, although the body is more expensive, can usually make back the price difference within a year. Finally, I would like to remind you of a pitfall that is often overlooked: before buying, check whether the consumables of this model are good to buy and whether the price is stable. For models whose consumables are discontinued or difficult to purchase, no matter how cheap the machine is, it is not cost-effective.

Tip

  • Opting for a multi-function machine (printing + photocopying + scanning) is more practical than a single-function machine, and can be used for scanning and submitting jobs and document copies.
  • Models with automatic document feeder (ADF) and double-sided printing can save a lot of time and paper when processing multi-page reports

Headphones, power bank and internet: three practical accessories for commuting and dormitories

Headphones: Ambient noise in dormitories and libraries is a concentration killer. The difference between in-ear and over-ear models with active noise cancellation (ANC) is obvious, especially for people who have roommates with different schedules or who need to study in a noisy environment. It should be noted that the over-ear type will be sweltering in Taiwan's summer if worn for a long time, and the in-ear type has higher elasticity if used for commuting and library use. Power bank: The capacity depends on mAh, but more attention should be paid to the output power and whether it supports PD fast charging. If your laptop supports Type-C charging, choose a power bank with a PD output of more than 65W to take care of both your phone and your laptop. You don’t need to carry two when you go out. Pay attention to aviation regulations. Around 20,000mAh is the less controversial capacity range for flying. Network equipment: Living in dormitories usually uses the school network, so there is no need to bring your own. Those who rent a house must first confirm whether the landlord provides an independent line or a shared line for the entire building. No matter how good the shared router is, it cannot save the lack of bandwidth. You really need to bring your own router, and choose based on the number of square meters used and the number of devices connected at the same time. There is no need to pursue flagship specifications from the beginning.

Tip

  • For power banks, first confirm that the laptop supports Type-C charging (not all models support it), and then decide whether to buy a high-wattage model.
  • It is recommended to actually try on noise-canceling headphones. The difference in ear canal shape will make the sealing effect of the same headphones much different on different people.

How to allocate budget and when to apply for education price

Assuming that the total budget is fixed, a relatively pragmatic allocation ratio is: about 60% for laptops, about 20% for desktop environment (desk lamp + chair), and about 20% for peripheral accessories (headphones, power banks, etc.). The most common imbalance is that laptops consume 90% of the budget, resulting in four years of reading in an ill-fitting chair and using a lamp that is not bright enough. In terms of schedule, most Back to School education projects of various brands are concentrated from mid-July to the end of September. Apple’s BTS usually starts in mid-June and ends at the end of September. Most brands can apply for education prices with their admission notice or student ID, and some require school email verification. There are two tips for practical operation: first, put the model you want to buy into the shopping cart and track the price for two weeks before buying. The price fluctuation during the school period is greater than expected; second, the education price and channel promotions sometimes cannot be superimposed. Before placing an order, try to calculate which of the two options is actually cheaper. Do not assume that the education price must be the lowest.

Tip

  • During the school term, the price difference for the same model at different channels may be thousands of yuan, so compare prices before placing an order.
  • Education prices usually cannot be combined with credit card channel rewards. Remember to include the rewards into the total price before comparing.
Key Takeaways / SUMMARY 5
  • 1 You don’t have to buy all the 3Cs for the start of school: laptops, desk lamps, and the Internet are “necessities before school starts,” while monitors, printers, and tablets are “replenished after school starts based on demand.”
  • 2 Decide on the type of accommodation first and then make a list - living in a dormitory is limited by space and sockets, renting a house requires you to handle the network by yourself, and living in a home usually only lacks personal equipment.
  • 3 Education prices and Back to School schedules are concentrated from mid-July to the end of September. Most brands can apply with their admission notice or student ID.
  • 4 Desk lamps and chairs are two items that are most often skipped but most affect long-term reading efficiency. You should not spend all your budget on laptops.
  • 5 The focus of a printer is not the price of the machine but the cost per sheet. For those who print less than a hundred sheets a year, it is more cost-effective to use schools or supermarkets to print.
